These are two faces of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. . With its area of 1,856 sqm it is the largest protected area in the Alps. The protected area extends over a large original Alpine landscape, such as glaciers, rock walls and meadows, and mountain pastures, carefully and painstakingly maintained for many centuries.
The High Tauern National Park was established in 1981 and is the first national park in Austria. In the following years, the protected area, which occupies parts of three Austrian federal countries - Kärnten, Salzburg and Tyrol, became the largest protected natural area.
