History
From the original 'Pfarrwiese' pastures to the first development in the guise of the 'Sonnenhang' to the semblance of the SUN area today, there was and continues to be motion on the sunlit west slopes at the foot of Matrei's Klaunzerberg.

Formerly belonging to the parish of Matrei the slope, which was also known as "Tischler Roan", was a very popular slope for skiing and for ski jumping in particular from the 1920s right through to the 1950s.

In the middle of the 1960s upon the construction of the Felbertauern tunnel, the first kilometres of the Felbertauernstraße were laid through this slope, and these days the road runs behind the SUN area. In the 1970s the initial plans for to develop the "Sonnenhang" beneath the Felbertauernstraße were drawn up. Then in the middle of the 1970s, the 20 homes which are still on the Sonnenhang today, were built.

Natalia and Friedl Ganzer got to know each other in the 1970s in Matrei, fell in love and married in 1978. It was in this year that Friedl also purchased the first building plot at the end of the Sonnenhang, where the Ganzer family's home was built between 1978 and 1981, above where the Classic & Design apartments are now. In 1981, 1983 and 1987 son Natalis and daughters Theresia and Katharina were born.

In the 1990s Friedl purchased another plot beneath his family home, where, between 1994 and 1995 the first holiday apartments were built - today's SUN Matrei Classic apartments.

In 2003 another plot of land below and next to the existing area was purchased, where the old, derelict "Lichtackererhaus" stood. Eventually in 2006 work began to pull down, excavate and build the new complex of the Design apartments, complete with underground parking. By Christmas 2007 the first guests were welcomed in the completed, contemporary apartments. In the coming years another fantastic, sunny, multi-functional relaxation, seminar and wellness area were constructed.

In 2014 the new Tradition apartments were completed. They were built where the old Weiler Haus once stood. These new holiday apartments completed the range of apartments available in SUN Matrei with their traditional wood and stone features.
